For the month of December we are happy to present a new consultant at Tefen USA, Maria Silva. Maria has joined Tefen in 2017, and in the interview she told us about her inspiration, her vision for being a consultant, and more.
Tell us about your background (education, previous work, etc):
I’m originally from Mexico and did my undergraduate program there, at the Tecnologicode de Monterrey, in Biomedical Engineering. Later, I did my Master’s degree in NYU, in Technology Management.
Before joining Tefen, I worked in a US biomedical device company. There, I coordinated the logistics between the clinical trials done in Mexico and the company itself in the US.
What drew you to apply to Tefen Management Consulting?
I wanted to join a management consulting firm already when I was doing my Master’s degree. I wanted a firm that could merge business, life sciences and healthcare. Since I come from biomedical background I also wanted a company that deals specifically with this field.
Then I found Tefen – and discovered that Tefen did every project that I wanted to do in any field. They did projects in pharma, biomed, healthcare, hospitals, and more.
Tefen has the exact combination between business and life sciences, and this motivated me to join the firm.
What do you like the most and the least about your consultant life?
What I like the most – there are a lot of possibilities and many paths that we can apply to assist our clients. There is not an absolute “right or wrong answer”. We can think outside of the box, and try different paths in order to innovate – and come up with solutions for our clients.
I also like the people that I work with. They are very smart and there is so much to learn from them.
The least – like every consultant, you have to keep balance between work and life. But it’s not that bad, actually.
What’s the main goal for a management consultant according to you?
To provide practical actions and solutions for our clients. Not only a dream solution but something that could be done step by step and assist them, while providing value for the clients and projects.
What are your activities (if any) about outside of work?
I love exercising, running in particular. I did a half marathon, and I want to run a complete one. That’s my goal. I also like traveling, reading, and hanging out with my friends.
What or who is the biggest source of influence in your life?
My mother. She always supported me and encouraged me to never settle or give up. She’s one of the main reasons I studied abroad, and consequently – the reason why I work at Tefen now.
